ATA Queensland Branch – Members Update / Queensland / 09 Jan, 2012

The year is in full swing and many of our states top horses are back in the stables in preparation for the upcoming Winter Carnival.

We are hoping that by the time this article goes to print Toowoomba jockey Kristy Banks will have made some positive progress after her New Years Eve fall. It is also sad news to report the passing of well known stable-hand Peter Nelson from Caloundra. Better known as “itchy”, Peter was a regular race-day strapper and will be certainly missed.

Our next meeting for trainers will be at the Hamilton Hotel on Thursday 9th February starting at 10.30am.

The meeting will cover a range of topics for discussion along with guest speakers in relation to our industry. We are hoping to have the current Minister for Racing in attendance in response to having the shadow Racing Minister at our last meeting. As usual we will be addressing many issues and doing what we can do improve the ongoing problems and concerns facing Queensland Trainers. The issue of Workers Compensation that has been ongoing will be high on the agenda at this meeting. Please let Cameron Partington know of your attendance for catering purposes on 0433 329 395.

The 2012 Ambassador Travel Racetree Wayne Wilson Medal has been won for the month of December by Eagle Farm trainer David Lawlor. David had a Saturday Metro Double on 17th December winning the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes with NOOGOORA BURR and the BM95 Handicap with MAILING.

NOOGOORA BURR, a 2yo son of Royal Academy has two wins from his 3 starts and may well be a strong contender in the Magic Millions. The night before his winning double David also had a winner with I'LLBETRICKED at Caloundra, which was the 2nd win in 8 days for that horse after winning at Eagle Farm on the 7th December.

It was a fantastic month for David who is currently battling ill health for which we all wish him the best. David only has a small team of 6 horses and his wife Cheryl does plenty of the work to keep the stable going.

The 12 monthly winners will be in the running for the 2012 Wayne Wilson Medal. The Medal is proudly promoted by the ATA and sponsored by Ambassador Travel and Racetree, with the winner receiving an all inclusive trip for two to the 2012 Cox Plate along with of course, the Wayne Wilson Medal. Thanks once again to our sponsors and
