ATA Queensland Branch – Members Update / Queensland / 11 Jan, 2011

With much of our state suffering from the recent flooding, we must thank Racing Queensland Limited for all of the assistance given to our Queensland Trainers during this time. With financial assistance, and support with relocation, we hope that all affected trainers can bounce back as quickly as possible and get back to racing.

The trial being implemented by Racing Queensland to move acceptances forward by 24hrs for Saturday Metropolitan meetings is to commence on Saturday 5th February.

Racing Queensland consulted with us on this issue, with the main reason for wanting it being to increase the amount of potential for fixed price pre-post betting.

The ATA’s response to this was to agree to the trial, providing a detailed plan on the process of significantly increasing prize-money across all our meetings being undertaken. On discussion with our members this is by far the most important issue that needs immediate attention.

Another area of concern that we are looking into is the criteria being used by Racing Queensland in relation to the transfer of meetings from the grass to the cushion track at Caloundra. With the majority of trainers clearly preferring to race on the grass, we need to know that this process of transferring to the cushion is only occurring as a matter of necessity.

The Ambassador Travel Racetree Wayne Wilson Medal has been won for the month of December by Ben Ahrens, for his fantastic result in winning the Group 3 Summer Cup at Randwick on Boxing Day with his 5yo gelding SPECHENKA. After winning 3 city races in a row leading up to his trip south, Ben was able to have SPECHENKA spot on for the 2400m against the best stayers going around.

Ben trains a team of 14 from his family owned property “Epsom Lodge” at Beaudesert and is always on the lookout for new horses. A qualified Physiotherapist, Ben now concentrates full-time on his horses and has his stable star in the paddock for a well earned rest before preparation begins for the Winter Carnival, where he has the Brisbane Cup in his sights.

The 12 monthly winners will be in the running to win the inaugural Wayne Wilson Medal for the 2010-11 racing season. The Medal is proudly promoted by the ATA and sponsored by Ambassador Travel and Racetree, with the winner at the end of the racing season receiving an all inclusive trip for two to the 2011 Cox Plate along with a magnificent perpetual trophy, and of course the Wayne Wilson Medal.
Thanks once again to our sponsors and
