Black Caviar crowned 2011 Australian Racehorse of the Year / National / 19 Sep, 2011

BLACK CAVIAR is now the officially the best horse in the land after being crowned the 2011 Sky Racing Australian Racehorse of the Year.

The unbeaten mare and her connections were the stars of the Australian Racehorse of the Year Awards presented by Sky Racing, Tabcorp and Staging Connections at Melbourne's Crown Palladium.

Along with the overall Racehorse of the Year title, BLACK CAVIAR was named the Inglis Bloodstock Champion Sprinter and was voted the Staging Connections Most Popular Racehorse by the public.

With six Group 1 victories in her 2010-11 season haul, it was not surprising that her trainer Peter Moody tonight collected the AustralianSuper Champion Group 1 Trainer Award with nine elite wins last season.

BLACK CAVIAR's jockey Luke Nolen, who last month collected his first Scobie Breasley Medal, was presented with the Michelton Wines Champion Group 1 Jockey Award with a nation high eight wins.

With votes lodged on a 3-2-1 basis by senior racing administrators and members of the racing media nationwide, BLACK CAVIAR secured 301 of a maximum 318 votes in the Racehorse of the Year Award.

As was the case in last month's Victorian Racehorse of the Year Award, SO YOU THINK had to be content with second on 208 votes with two-year-old SEPOY next on 58 votes and MORE JOYOUS fourth on 48.

It was the second consecutive year that a Moody-trained mare has been crowned Australian Racehorse of the Year after TYPHOON TRACY took the honours 12 months ago.

Indeed mares have dominated the award this millennium securing the title in eight of the 12 years courtesy of SUNLINE (2000-02), MAKYBE DIVA (2005-06), MISS ANDRETTI (2007) and the Moody pair.

One of the few to have upstaged them in that period is 2004 winner LONHRO who completed a unique double when named the Carrazzo Consulting CPAs Champion Sire for the first time.

The Darley stallion amassed progeny earnings in excess of $8.7 million during the 2010-11 season with his standout performer being Doomben 10,000 winner BEADED.

Darley and head trainer Peter Snowden had further cause for celebration when their boom colt SEPOY collected the coveted Eliza Park Champion 2YO Award ahead of stablemates HELMET and BENFICA.

The connections of BLACK AND BENT are celebrating their second straight Mittys Champion Jumper Award, whilst SO YOU THINK, last year's BPA Print Group Champion 3YO Colt, also won consecutive awards after being crowned the 2011 Monjon Australia Champion Middle Distance Performer.
