Brian Speers appointed new Chair of Tasracing / Tasmania / 26 Nov, 2009

The Minister for Racing, Michael Aird, has announced the appointment of Brian Speers as the new Chair of Tasracing.

Mr Aird said Mr Speers, a Hobart businessman and currently Deputy Chair of Tasracing, was widely respected in the Tasmanian racing industry.

“Mr Speers has been involved in the racing industry for more than 30 years and is very highly regarded."

“He has successfully owned and raced both thoroughbred and pacing horses and has served as Chairman of the Tasmanian Racing Club, Deputy Chairman of the Tasmanian Thoroughbred Racing Council and a member of the Brighton Jockey Club."

“Mr Speers was a member of the TOTE Tasmania board from 2004 to 2008.”

Mr Aird paid tribute to the outgoing Chair Don Abell.

“Mr Abell and his fellow Board members have helped the industry to take control of its own destiny and grow and flourish in a very competitive environment.

“He leaves Tasmanian racing in an excellent position in which to capture all of the opportunities that will present themselves in the future.”
