IMPORTANT NOTICE – New Helmets Update / National / 14 Dec, 2015

Further to the Australian Trainers’ Association’s (ATA) Notice to Members on 9 December regarding Racing Australia’s (RA) introduction of the proposed mandatory new Helmets, the response from members has been overwhelming. Furthermore, overwhelming in that the apparent expediency in attempting to roll out this new helmet has come at the expense of an industry wide consultative process that engages all affected participants – which includes many our own ATA members!

In a win for common sense, we can advise all members RA has formally agreed to defer the introduction of the new helmets. A forward date has not been set for the re-introduction of same, (previously mandated for March 2016); rather this will take effect only after legitimate concerns of industry participants - including those of the ATA - have been satisfied.

In terms of those concerns, the “wheels of motion” are already moving in a positive direction, with the manufacturer announcing on Sunday that a number of additional sizes of the race riding helmet will be produced. Previously, only three sizes were earmarked for national release.

The ATA is also advocating broader exposure to the helmets for members across the country. Touch and feel is in our view, far better than simply watching a video, or hearing another’s view second hand. More will follow on this subject shortly, together with key updates as the consultative process continues.
