Mr John Messara AM has been elected Chairman of the Australian Racing Board (ARB) on the retirement of the Honourable Michael Duffy after 6 years as an ARB Director, the last two as Chairman.
Mr Messara is currently Chairman of Racing NSW and has had a long-standing involvement in all aspects of the industry. Previously a stock broker and a Member of the Sydney Stock Exchange, in 1985 Mr Messara established and has since managed the leading Australian-owned racing and breeding operation, Arrowfield Group. In 2008, Mr Messara was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for services to the breeding and racing industry.
Mr Messara paid tribute to his predecessor Michael Duffy saying that he had expanded and strengthened the ARB in fulfilment of its national and international responsibilities.
“Michael’s term as Chairman saw an overhaul of the rules of racing relating to integrity, including the introduction of minimum penalties and the ban on anabolic steroids. He was an outstanding leader who enjoyed the respect and support of all jurisdictions.” Mr Messara said.
The Chairman of Racing Queensland [RQ], Kevin Dixon, was elected Deputy Chairman of the ARB at the same time. Mr Dixon is a former Chairman of the Brisbane Racing Club and Managing Director of Racetree Thoroughbred Stud before his appointment as Chairman of RQ in early 2012. Mr Dixon brings business acumen to his responsibilities, having commenced his career with international company Andersen Consulting.
