South West TAFE’s Glenormiston College, along with Racing Victoria Limited (RV), are pleased to announce they will be continuing to run the Trackrider Talent Identification Camps again in 2011 and 2012. The next program will be held from October 2nd till the 8th of October at Glenormiston College with trackwork taking place at a local race track.
Riders from across Victoria will be trained to ride and work with thoroughbred race horses via a camp at Glenormiston College It will allow people to use their skills to gain employment in the industry while helping address the industry’s skills shortage. There will be numerous industry speakers throughout the camps covering various careers in racing along with theoretical classes and mounted instruction on thoroughbred race horses both on and off the track. TAFE Equine qualifications will be completed throughout the camps.
There are 3 programs, tailored to the different experiences and skills of riders.
Level 1-Novice Track Rider Program
This program is developed for people wishing to become a track rider or jockey with little or no riding experience. The program is to be run over 5 days delivered by pony club/ riding club instructors, it may be necessary for candidates to be tested on riding skills at a later date.
Level 2- Track Rider Program for existing riders
This program is designed for an experienced rider wishing to learn how to ride track work. The program is run over 6 days at both Glenormiston and at a local race track. Riding skills are a a prerequisite to entry into this program.
Level 3- Advanced Track Rider Program
This program is designed for those who have existing track rider experience or who have completed the Level 2 Program and would like to enter the industry as a professional track rider. The proram is run over 3 days most of which will be spent on the track. It may be necessary for some candidates to be assessed at a later date.
